Ingredients

  • Ingredients:
  • 10 slices (white or brown) bread
  • 1 cup of besan (gram flour)
  • 1/4 cup rice flour
  • One teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • One teaspoon cumin powder
  • One teaspoon of coriander powder
  • One-half teaspoon baking soda
  • Salt to taste
  • Water, enough to form a thick batter.
  • Frying using vegetable oil
  • For the filling
  • Two big boiling and mashed potatoes.
  • 1 cup cooked and mashed mixed veggies (peas, carrots, and green beans)
  • One teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • One teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • One teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon coarsely chopped green chilis
  • a handful chopped fresh coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon of oil.

  1. Prepare the Filling:

    • Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds and mustard seeds.
    • Once they splutter, add grated ginger and chopped green chilies. Saute for a minute.
    • Add the boiled and mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, and salt. Mix well and cook for 5-7 minutes.
    • Add chopped coriander leaves, mix, and let the filling cool.
  2. Prepare the Batter:

    • In a bowl, mix gram flour, rice flour, turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, baking soda, and salt.
    • Add water gradually and whisk to make a smooth, thick batter.
  3. Assemble the Bread Pakoras:

    • Cut the edges of the bread slices if desired.
    • Take two slices of bread and spread a generous amount of the prepared filling between them to make a sandwich.
    • Cut each sandwich into halves or quarters.
  4. Heat Oil for Frying:

    • Heat enough oil in a deep pan for frying over medium heat.
  5. Dip and Fry:

    • Dip each sandwich into the prepared batter, ensuring it is well-coated.
    • Carefully place the coated sandwich into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crisp.
    • Remove from the oil and place them on a kitchen towel to absorb excess oil.
  6. Serve:

    • Serve the hot and crispy bread pakoras with mint chutney, tamarind chutney, or ketchup.
